Weekly Fraud Alert: Selling a mortgage

As most real estate professionals know, once originated, mortgages rarely remain with the original lender.  As a result, a new type of fraud has recently come to light.  In this type of scam, someone purports to be the new owner of a mortgage and sends the homeowner a letter informing the homeowner to send mortgage payments to a new address.

To avoid falling victim to this type of fraud, the attorney general’s office advises homeowners who receive these types of letters to call their current mortgage servicer (not the number in the letter) and verify the information in the letter is correct.
